Rheumatology is the study of inflammatory conditions that affect the bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The most common of these diseases are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis but there are many others. Many rheumatic diseases involve issues with the immune system. This system is designed to protect us from disease but in some cases it can attack the body, causing illness instead of preventing it. When this occurs, the resulting disease is called an “autoimmune disease”.
Rheumatology is a very complex medical specialty because inflammation and autoimmune diseases are often difficult to diagnose and treat. There can be multiple causes for these diseases, and it can be difficult to identify a successful form of treatment. Treatment is often long-term.
Fortunately, RMH Rheumatologists are very educated and experienced in their field, assuring that their patients receive the best care. The goal of RMH Rheumatology is to help patients overcome the pain and loss of function that is so common in rheumatologic conditions. We know that living with these diseases is not easy. We appreciate the trust that our patients place in us when dealing with the often difficult challenges of autoimmune and inflammatory disease. We are committed to remaining at the forefront of medical advances in this field so that we can continue to maximize the quality of life of all of our patients.
